Winemakers have a word for it: terroir. It’s the sum total of all the elements—climate, soils, farming and much more—that transform a wine into a unique expression of time and place. Few places combine so many magical components as Argentina’s Uco Valley. Here, the foothills of the Andes mountains provide stony soil for ideal drainage and root growth. High altitude (3,700 feet) and arid conditions (only about 12 inches of rain annually) create wide thermal ranges and long growing seasons. Days can exceed 30º Celsius, and nights sometimes fall to 5º or lower. The drama plays out in our grapes, with healthy, concentrated fruit, beautiful color, and long ripening seasons that allow each vintage to realize its fullest potential. Fewer know the small Uco Valley geographical indication of Los Chacayes, which is fast becoming a center for winemakers seeking to expand the possibilities for terroir-driven Argentina wines. More than twenty years ago, François Lurton pioneered winemaking here with his Piedra Negra wines and generously agreed to share the Geographical Indication with other local wineries. In a designation that’s more political than terrior-influenced, the stream that forms the dividing line between the Los Chacayes and Los Sauces IGs runs through the middle of our properties.
